Put Nigerians First, OAU Advises Leaders, Emphasising Compassion and Inclusion

In a strong call for ethical and people-centered governance, Former Abia State governorship candidate and founder of the OAU foundation, Hon Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU), has urged Nigerian leaders to place the welfare of citizens at the forefront of their decision-making.
In a statement made available to newsmen, OAU highlighted the need for compassion, integrity, and inclusion as the foundation of effective governance in Nigeria.
According to Onyekwere Akym Uche, “Leadership is meaningful only when it uplifts communities, strengthens institutions, and offers hope to the people. Any administration that ignores the needs of its citizens is failing in its primary responsibility.”
Akym further emphasized that good governance is not just about policy or infrastructure, but about empathy and active engagement with the people.
“A leader who listens, who cares, and who acts in the interest of the most vulnerable in society is a leader who truly serves. Compassion must be the heartbeat of every government,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of inclusion, stressing that sustainable development can only be achieved when all Nigerians, regardless of region, religion, or background, are represented and considered in decision-making processes.
“We cannot talk about progress while leaving segments of our society behind. Inclusive leadership ensures that every voice matters, and that no one is left behind,” Akym added.
Hon Onyekwere Akym Uche therefore urged leaders at all levels of government to adopt policies that prioritize education, healthcare, women/youth empowerment and social welfare, arguing that these areas are essential for national growth and stability.
“Putting Nigerians first is not a slogan; it is a moral obligation and a strategic imperative. Governments must design programs and initiatives that directly improve the lives of citizens, particularly the marginalized,” Uche stated.
Summarily, Onyekwere Akym Uche called on Nigerians to engage actively in governance by holding leaders accountable and promoting ethical leadership.
“Together, as citizens and leaders, we can build a Nigeria where government serves the people genuinely, and where compassion and inclusion guide every decision,” he said.
He also pledged to continue advocating for people-centered leadership and to support initiatives that promote transparency, fairness, and social justice across the country.
